You build up credits by creating threads in the forum (30 credits), replying to other people's threads (20 credits) or by adding to other users' reputation by clicking the scales icon on the right hand side at the top of their posts.

Nobody ever battles their pets - cos it's expensive (500 credits) and u risk your pet dying lol
