It can work but you both have to be on the same wavelength and understand the boundaries, i had an ongoing thing with a friend for 6 years on and of and it didn't effect our friendship at all, we aren't lovers now but are still best friends.
But i have seen others try the same and they have lost a good friend, it's good when it works but it can be very risky.
