Its because generally men are stupid and think that it will enable them to get in girls knickers. The thing is it works sometimes so guys think its worth trying because there is a chance it will work.

Sadly the above posts are true in most cases...

Saying that we love you on the first date also means that we want to spend more time with you.

Just like you'd say... I love saunas... or I love It's expressing that you really 'love' the feeling you get when with someone measured in units of time.

If you want to take off your knickers, well I suppose that's just more time spent with that person haha

he may say it as ........ I love u for what you stand for, or maybe I want to be with u again so its a way of showing emotion........ Not so much as I love u or I have fallen in love with you. Love dose'nt form overnight its a long processing bond as u may know.
