Hello, I have Vista Basic. I have a win? clean-up thing lol. Was sposed to clean duplicate files and shortcuts. When scan was finished it recommended that i put them in recycle bin which i did. When i next went on comp it wudn't boot. Got onto System Tree (don't ask me how) and did a scan. everything passed apart from Confidence Test and SATA DISK S/N = 9LS31GS9- S.M.A.R.T. Short Self scan. got message IDE device failed.Blank media or no media is present in optical device. Anybody know how to fix it. many thanks. taz xxxx

sounds like youv wiped the hard drive
do you not have norton go back
or system restore software?
if you have a virus scanner such as norton or macafee they should have system restore points

Yes it does sound as though this programme you have has deleted some system files. Apparently 'Startup Repair' is included on the installation media, so if you don't have the disk you're a bit snookered!

I give Vista a thumbs up anyway. Been using a 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate for a while now and I'm very happy with it.
