The gray cable that comes with the PS3 is called a Ethernet cable or RJ45 cable. this plugs directly into your cable modem or you router. You may need to restart you cable modem for it to work correctly.

Then go to your network setting in the first bar under hard ware setting and read though it carefully.

If you get stuck type PS3 network settings into goggle and it will show you web pages on how to do it properly.

Just to clarify the PS3 can be connected to the internet via a Ethernet cable or wireless to a router (Make sure you have your WPA/WEP handy for the wireless).

As for subscription, all you need to do is create an PSN account which is free and when you log in its free to play games, chat to friends, etc etc. Recently Sony have released something called 'Playstation Plus' which is a paid subscription service which allows you to get free games, exclusive game content for a period of time before others and even discounted stores. Not sure on price but i think its around 40quid a year.
