P.C Screen Recorders

I was doing the usual the other day surfing multiple websites at once found a game walk through site and started watching it. It gave me an interesting idea to make one myself so i set up my pc for games and then it hit me. How was i going to record what i was doing while i was doing it. So i started looking for a screen recorder only to find there are thousands of them so to cut a long story short has anyone ever used a screen recorder? And do you have any preferences or favourite's? Any idea's are welcome!!
