There are tragedies like this happening all over the world from time to time. Remember the awful flooding in New Orleans? At the time it was in the news, people reacted just like they are over the latest disaster in Haiti but visit the place today and you will see that absolutely nothing has been done. Where did all those millions go that was sent to the US to help the people of New Orleans? Iit still looks like a bombs hit it and the survivors are still living there, they haven't been found new homes, are struggling to survive but they've been forgotten about. The US decided that such a flooding could happen again so it would be a total waste of money to rebuild New Orleans. One has to ask why then did they not use the money they were sent to build another town in a safe area for the survivors?
When a disaster happens these days I just feel helpless as so many millions of support money just seems to disappear into thin air. The crucial 72 hours has come and gone for any survivors in Haiti and the news keeps showing us that still these people are without food, water and medical help. Many millions of pounds of aid has so far has been sent over there but it will take a number of years for any sort of normality to be restored and I feel that like those survivors of the tsunami and New Orleans once the initial shock, horror and oh we must help has waned, those people will be forgotten again. |
