Post helping an alcoholic

my mates an alcoholic.
he's only 22 but we all know he's got a problem.
occasionally my mates and me talk about it but it doesnt get beyond us saying "he needs to sort it out"
one friend did suggest an intervention a few months ago which i thought was maybe a bit extreme.

anyway now im rethinking it because he came over to my place on saturday and was an absolute nightmare!
iv TOLD my mate who sells him coke to stop selling it to him. he's always moaning he owes him money anyway.
but now he gets it off some kids down the pub.

so i think its too hard to get him to stop buying illegal drugs.
we were thinking of going around town and getting shops to stop selling him booze.
i think thats the best idea & cheapest as a professional intervention apparently costs between £1000-£1500 and then rehab was alot more expensive on top.

his mum is bat **** crazy so theres no help there.
talking to his dad might be a good idea.

what have others done in a similar situation

talking seems useless. and i cant afford to go round his flat and find things to do for him so he isnt getting drunk.
we did start playing golf on a sunday at noon. but the 2nd week he was drunk already.

It's good that your friend has people who care. Fortunately I have never had to deal with anything like this, but I guess my starting point would be to get as much information about the professional help which is available and support him in the journey. At the end of the day, your friend has to want to be sorted out - that is the real challenge. I'm not sure where the law stands on shop owners not selling him drink so that might be tricky. Even if this happened I am sure your friend would find a way to get hold of the stuff, after all, he could get someone else to buy it for him.
