I was in the same position a few months ago. I did the obvious thing which was to ask friends/family about their experiences with different models and of course got lots of different views! I then went into a mobile phone shop (when it wasn't very busy) to get some advice. The important thing is to be clear on what you want the phone to do as, like many gadgets, you might not ever use half the functions. Remember that sales people will be trying to flog you phones which aren't shifting so you need to stick yo your guns. In the end I chose a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, mostly for the camera/HD video capture but also because it has a large screen, and I'm happy with it. Remember that the Apple phones don't give you Flash (or so I was told) which may be a problem when you are viewing some Interent pages.
