Hi guys
Im sure some of you have heard the term IRC, at some point during your internet lifes, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat.
IRC was created a long time ago, IRC is actually a protocal (Set of Rules) that allow you to connect to other IRC servers, IRC was probably one of the first chats I ever tryed a long time ago now probably somewhere round about the 90s.
There are many features on IRC far too many to mention on here, but IRC is very flexible and also fast.
You can use IRC via the web or you can access IRC by using a bit of software called a client, then using this client you can connect to other servers, once you have logged onto the server, you can then access a list of channels, or rooms as we would know them on World of Chat.
There are literally 1000s of servers out there, although it is hard to find a good one.
Unfortunately IRC is looks very dated now, it does tend to be very basic looking, with none of fun flash options like it world of chat, or the colorful layout. Also it has problems with bots (robots) on IRC servers, as bots are used to control some features of the chat room, they are also used for other destructive purposes, for example flooding the room with lots of information and causing the server to crash, or most commonly they are used to advertise websites and used to spam.
Also if you have a website with a chat room incorporated into it using IRC, you don’t actually have to visit the website to access the chat room, you can just boot up your client software and connect via there if you know the server names, which is really a major minus point if you are wanting to get lots of visits to your website.
I personally didn’t use IRC much, there are usually lots of people logged on but very few of them actually chat lol, which kind of defeats the object lol, it wasn’t unusual to access a chat room with 50 people init and them all to be idle, and you end up talking to yourself.
Some big chat rooms do still use IRC though, in fact uk chatterbox still uses IRC, it will be interesting to see if they keep using it.
