I started using chat rooms some years ago, chat rooms were different then, but as Internet access has become cheaper and more freely available more people used chat rooms and they slowly started to attract the wrong element.
I started using msn comic chat some 10 years ago which was pretty naff for those of you that remember it, when then moved onto msn chat which was widely accepted as the best chat site available, chat rooms peaked in the early 2000s with thousands of people using chat rooms every day.
In Oct 2004 msn decided to close their rooms to the public, this left thousands of chatters looking for somewhere else to chat.
Most of the big Internet companies have their own chat rooms and indeed tried to attract the msn chatter towards their site here is how their fair.
Yahoo chat rooms still exist, they are not easy to find anymore however, as you need to download the US version of their yahoo messenger, they have continued to decline in quality, and are now full of bots or robot chatters, just spamming the chat rooms with advertisements, you can still go there as they have web cam chat and voice chat, but I doubt you will find many real people there.
Lots went to freeserve chat (Now Orange), which has now closed, due to spamming issues, they posted a statement on their website saying they could no longer deal with the spam robots in their chat rooms, as soon as they were banning them the bots were returning, instead of investing in new software they took the difficult decision to close.
Some went to Lycos chat, lycos chat again still operates today, lycos chat is flash based just like world of chat, lycos chat did seem to be a viable option for the chat room community it is colorful and their do have hosts there, but unfortunately some idiot who works within their company came up with the idea of making people PAY yes pay and whats more amazing is some people actually do lol. lycos chat is a good chat room but if you pay to use a chat room then you need to get yourself a girlfriend plain and simple !
Aol chat some of you might also have tried the Aol chat rooms, aol chat rooms are not very good they are an add on to aol messenger and their messenger is confusing to say the least in my opinion these chat rooms are open to hackers and people who send trojans, with no hosts in the rooms and a lack of support I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Now I will give you the answer to where the people really went after msn chat closed down, they tried all the above chat rooms and more and noticed they were not the same, the fact is that lots of people stopped using chat rooms after msn closed it doors.
