Where Does This Data Come From?

Before we dive in it is important to know exactly where these numbers come from and what they actually mean. The main statistics in this report come from the **National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC)**. This is a massive official safety group based in the USA.

Even though NCMEC is in America they track reports from all over the planet. Thousands of tech companies from social media apps to chat websites send them data. So while a lot of this data comes from the United States the problem is 100% worldwide. Criminals online do not care about borders. A scammer in a completely different country can just as easily log into an English chat room and target a teenager living in the UK or Australia.

Because the internet connects everyone instantly an attack pattern showing up in the USA USA data is also happening on screens in homes across Europe and the UK right now.

What Criminals Actually Do With AI

You have probably heard people say the phrase “Generative AI” but what does that actually mean when it comes to internet crime? In the past when adult creepers or scammers wanted to trick a teenager online they just stole a picture of a random kid from Facebook and used it as their profile picture. That is called catfishing.

But today criminals use artificial intelligence to do things that are much more advanced and dangerous. Here is exactly what they are doing to trick innocent teenagers:

  • Creating Imaginary People: Criminals use AI image generators to instantly create super realistic photos of teenagers. Because these photos are created by a computer and the kid in the picture does not actually exist anywhere in real life reverse image searches do not work. You cannot easily prove the picture is fake.
  • Voice Cloning: Criminals use cheap software to completely change how their voice sounds in voice chats or voice notes. A 40 year old man can talk into a microphone and the AI software makes him sound exactly like a 15 year old girl in real time.
  • Chatbots Doing The Talking: Scammers use AI chat programs to run hundreds of conversations at the exact same time. The bot is programmed to speak using modern slang and act super friendly. Once the bot finds a teenager who trusts it the real criminal steps in to take over the conversation and start demanding things.
  • Making Fake Nude Photos (Deepfakes): This is the scariest part. If a teenager shares just an innocent selfie a criminal can use AI software to turn that normal picture into a totally fake naked picture.

The Startling Truth: Because of these new dirty tricks cases of criminals using AI to attack kids went from about 6,800 reports in early 2024 to an unbelievable 440,000 reports in early 2025. That is a massive explosion of fake identities in chat spaces.

The Rise of Teen Blackmail

When you put all of these fake AI tools together it leads to a very specific crime called Financial Sextortion. This specific scam targets teenage boys more than anyone else and it is growing incredibly fast across the USA and the UK.

Here is exactly how the scam works step by step so you know what to watch out for. First a criminal uses a fake AI picture of an attractive girl to message a teenage boy in a chat room or on a gaming app. They act super friendly and chat for a little while to build trust.

Then the scammer sends a photo to the boy and asks him to send an intimate photo back. Sometimes the boy falls for it and sends a real photo. But even if the boy just sends a normal selfie the scammer can use AI to make a fake naked photo of him.

As soon as the scammer has a photo of the boy the trap snaps shut. The scammer suddenly demands money. Usually they demand it in Bitcoin or online gift cards. If the teenager refuses to pay the scammer threatens to send the embarrassing photo directly to the boy’s parents teachers and friends on Instagram or Snapchat.

This causes extreme panic. Kids get so scared of having their lives ruined that they do dangerous things to try and find the money to pay the ransom. Between the start of 2024 and 2025 cases of this specific blackmail crime jumped from 13,800 to over 23,500 reports.

How To Stay Safe Online

The numbers sound scary but you do not need to quit the internet forever. Knowing how the criminals operate is the absolute best way to stay safe when you use chat rooms or social media apps.

Here are the most important rules to remember when talking to people you do not know in real life:

  • Never send compromising photos. Even if you really trust the person on the other side of the screen it is never worth the risk.
  • Do not trust pictures. Just because someone sends you a video or a picture that completely matches their story does not mean they are real. AI can fake anything instantly now.
  • Keep it public. Criminals always want to move you away from a public chat room where moderators are watching. They will ask you to move to a private encrypted app like Telegram or Snapchat right away so they can trap you in secret. Do not go.
  • Talk to someone. If you ever get blackmailed do NOT pay the scammer. Paying them never stops them they will just ask for more money. Take a deep breath and tell a trusted adult or parent immediately it is the only real way to make it stop.

Good chat websites are working hard to build better blocks against bots and AI accounts but you are always the first line of defense. Remember if someone you just met online tries to move way too fast or demands secrets from you immediately log off and block them.
